Workshop G
David Bawden (City U, London, UK) and Polona Vilar (U of Ljubljana, Slovenia): Meet or manage ? User expectations of digital libraries.
PowerPoint presentation
This workshop is mainly aimed at young researchers whose research topics include the best ways of meeting user needs and wants in digital library settings, and at librarians who are trying to meet such needs and wants in practice.
It will be as interactive as possible, and will raise and discuss questions rather than answering them. There are no right answers, but there may be some useful perspectives and experiences to be shared.
The workshop will deal with these seven main questions:
- What do users expect of digital libraries (DLs)? How do we know?
- How do these differ from their expectations of conventional libraries? Why?
- Do they typically expect too much or too little? Why?
- Do expectations differ in any systematic way between different types or groups of users? Does knowing of such differences help DL service providers?
- Should we always hope to 'meet' expectations, by providing better services? How realistic is this ?
- Do we sometimes have to 'manage' expectations, by explanation and instruction?
- to avoid disappointment from unrealistic/impossible expectations?
- to help users appreciate the new, and perhaps unexpected, things that DLs can do?
- Are information literacy concepts helpful in dealing with these issues?
